How can i keep a home audio amplifier cool in a tight space.? I'm placing a home amplifier under a bed because i can't place it where i can be seen because i'm not allowed to have amplifiers in my dorm room. I'm trying yo find a easy way to stop it from over heating. I need a way to get enough air to it and an exhaust for the hot air. I just want to find an easy design to build. Daniel K replied: "If it is under your bed and there is an inch or two of space above the amp, you should be ok. If your bed is right on top of the amp and blocking the vents, that would not be good. You might try raising the bed a bit somehow." How do you bench test a rare Carver home audio amplifier for wattage? I have a rare proto type amp from Carver Pro Audio 2 Channel. It weights about 65lbs. We think it has about 600 watts per channel but we are not sure. How would you bench test a amp for wattage? flapjack replied: "Doubt it. More like 25W RMS
This rating has more to do with the characteristic output than a peak rating. It has to do a lot with the design side and you will not have access to that information. You should appreciate that AMP and not do anything stupid to it. If you make inquiry to Sunfire you may be able to get an answer from Bob himself. Or e-mail me with contact info and I will get you in touch.
Furthermore, if you have to ask how to do this you shouldn't." What home audio amplifier has six, seven or eight inputs? Looking for an amplifier that can handle all the inputs, one at a time required. Cassette tape, DVD player, Computer, TV & video, CD player, Radio etc. Not much room to have a look for equipment, and easy on the budget as well. For a small room.
Most amplifiers seem to have just four inputs. Current one has five (includes record deck) but this bit is faulty. 324324 3 replied: "yes"
jayktee96 replied: "Check Sony and similar, most cinema amps have about eight, mine is older model and has 10, includes video switching." I purchased a 680 watt home audio amplifier. Did I get what I paid for? Please help me understand this. i purchased what was advertised to be a 680Watt apmplifer. when I recieve it, the marking state that the Amp is a 2 channel 75Watt amplifier.
Am I missing something here? flapjack attack replied: "75w rms can be made to calculate to 340w peak. So yes and no."
XenonAudio replied: "If that was the advertisement, then their ad is misleading. Even if they were advertising max watts, the total would still only be 75 watts x 2 = 150 watts RMS. Max would be 150 watts x 2 = 300 watts. Perhaps the 75 watts is into 8 Ohms? However, even if it is and the amplifier can double its power into 4 Ohms (most amps on the market will not fully double in ooutput power by cutting the impedance in half) the total watts would still max out at only 600 watts.
What model of amplifier is it? Since there are so many other variables that will determine the amplifier's worth, if you can tell me what brand and model of amp it is, I can help you with what it's worth.

ROBERT P replied: "You should never buy an amplifier without checking all the power output specifications it has. What you have really got is an amplifier whose peak music power output is 680 watts which is a meaningless figure. This rating should never appear with a top quality 2 channel hi fidelity amplifier.Depending on your speakers if the 75 watt rating is a continuous or rms output it should be enough but check the owner's manual to be sure."
dddd replied: "thats peake power that turns out to be75watts rms which means continuois power. which is not bad." Best website for home audio amplifier selection? List a few good brands for me? Thanks Chen replied: "crutchfield"
Tie_Guy replied: "Best website for purchase or research? If purchase, Cruthfield sells a lot of nice amps, but you can also find a good variety from common stores like Circuity City, Best Buy, etc. Brands you'll want to look at (in the mid-range receiver market): Denon, Onkyo/Integra, Yamaha, and Sony, but there are others that also make fine products at various price points.
To pick out a good one, you'll want to know what kind of speakers you're going to hook up. If you need help figuring out what to look for in a receiver, I found this article that is loaded with useful info:--amp--Receiver-Power-Specifications/"
ROBERT P replied: "Hi.I am not sure where the best website for audio amplifiers is but i know some good brands and they are mostly British made which means quality before quanitity. Here are some good brands...

QUAD
CAMBRIDGE
MUSICAL FIDELITY

NAD" what is a good home audio amplifier, not to expensive, that will support 4.1, 4.2, 5.1, or 5.2 speakers? please help Quentin H replied: "I bought an Onkyo for $280 (speaker and everything) and it is AMAZING. Worth every cent, and then some. However that was a couple years ago and now the same one is about $300+. But it's still worth the money."
DAVID replied: "The number after the decimal point is the LFE channel otherwise known as the subwoofer. Most home theater receivers only have 1 subwoofer output but you can use a Y-splitter cable to send the same signal to two powered subwoofers.
Pretty much all receivers these days are 5.1 or 7.1 and some can do 4.1 where they matrix the center channel sound over the front speakers. Is this a requirement?
You would really have to define what not too expensive is. $200? $400? $600? more, less?" Best home audio amplifiers under $300? I'm looking for a home audio amplifier that I can use for my record player and dvd player.
Whats the best out there for under $300.
No speakers are needed Charles C replied: "Personally I would be looking at Ebay. An older Onkyo, Luxman or possibly Kenwood. You should be able to find a decent older reciever in that price range. I would even consider one of the Realistic or Optimus ( Radio Shack ) The resale on those is generally lower than other brands with comparable features."
Chuck S replied: ""Best" can start a long, involved discussion. It depends on what you like, and what you think 'best' means.
If you just ask 'what's the best' chances are you'll get as many different answers as people answering the question.
Look for clean power, low distortion (THD) and especially now, look for CURRENT input jacks. I've got components I can't make the best use of because they don't take HDMI or optical input etc..
Will you be looking for 5.1 ? 6.1? 7.1? Many CD's are not just stereo, although they should play in stereo. Phono will just be stereo. Will you eventually hook this up to other devices? home theater? If so, make sure you have the inputs and outputs for it.
I'd hit the yard sales. Right now, with 5.1 being so common, many people are ditching their old stereo gear for the newer, cheaper surround sound stuff. I picked up an old Harman Kardon amp for $2 at a yard sale this morning. It's got Hello Kitty stickers on it (and some unidentified sticky stuff I don't want to think about) but it works like a charm. A little electronics cleaner, some 409, some steel wool and Goo Gone .. I can either keep it or turn it over on Ebay for $50 .. Last week got an older Marantz amp for $20 (yard sale again) that would probably bring ten times that at auction..
So .. think about what you want to do with it, then hit the search engines!"
Kyle S replied: "I would try buying the Sony STR-DG510. It has lots of inputs and outputs so it can be used for almost anything. It should be powerful enough to run your record player and speakers. It is priced at $200. You can also take a step up and get the Sony STR-DG710. It is priced at $310. For the money you get 130 watts more and 6.1 channel surround sound instead of 5.1 channel surround sound and a few more inputs and outputs." |
